Where Culinary Excellence Meets Humanitarian Action

Spain / United States · Chef · Restaurateur · Author · Humanitarian

José Andrés has built a career in which food serves two very different purposes at once: culinary expression and immediate human response.

Born and trained in Spain, he moved to the United States at 21 and became a defining figure in the expansion of Spanish cuisine in America, particularly through Jaleo, the restaurant widely associated with popularizing tapas for U.S. audiences. Today, the José Andrés Group operates dozens of restaurants across the United States and internationally.

From Spanish Cuisine to Global Hospitality

Andrés developed his restaurant career by combining Spanish culinary traditions with a broader international perspective.

His restaurant portfolio spans multiple cuisines, formats and price points — from casual concepts and shared plates to the two-Michelin-starred minibar by José Andrés in Washington, D.C.

That diversity has made his work recognizable not through a single restaurant style, but through a larger philosophy: food as a way to bring people together across cultures.

Food as Emergency Response

In 2010, Andrés founded World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit organization created around the idea that cooks can play a direct role in humanitarian response.

The organization provides freshly prepared meals in communities affected by natural disasters, conflict and other crises, working alongside local chefs, restaurants and volunteers.

What began as a response following the earthquake in Haiti developed into an international humanitarian operation that has served hundreds of millions of meals worldwide.

A Broader Definition of What a Chef Can Do

José Andrés represents a model of culinary leadership that extends beyond restaurants.

His career connects hospitality, media, education, entrepreneurship and humanitarian work, challenging the conventional boundaries of the profession.

In his case, the kitchen is not only a place where food is created.

It can also become infrastructure.

A restaurant can become a cultural platform.

A chef can become an organizer.

And a meal can become an immediate form of assistance.

When Food Becomes Action

For some people, José Andrés is the chef who helped make tapas part of American dining culture.

And for millions who encountered his work through World Central Kitchen, he represents something else entirely: the idea that culinary knowledge can be mobilized when people need it most.

Those different dimensions make the connection people have with his work deeply personal.
